Four years ago today the river stage was 57 feet and the floodgate at Second and Orchard Street was closed. Folks living in Green Valley were experiencing driving uptown via the new Expressway crossing the railroad on McPherson Avenue. Twenty-two years ago today the first Community Chest campaign went over the top. E.V. “Tip” Wood was the first chairman. The goal in 1944 was $44,450. On this date in 1914, the name of the Detroit Southern railroad was changed to Detroit, Toledo & Ironton, and the Chamber of Commerce and the newspapers were rather cocky about the name of our town appearing on railway cars and locomotives.
