National Youth Association

Ironton Landmark

During the New Deal years, the National Youth Administration erected a large building on Third Street near Vine Street for a trade school. Many young men and women were taught to weld and learn other skills at the building. Through the efforts of the Junior Chamber of Commerce when Gilbert Salle and Andy Sexton were leaders, the federal government turned the building over to the school board after $3000 was raised by the Jaycees to move it to the high school property at Eight and Helper Streets where it is now the trade school work shop. Dr. Chester A Casey was president of the school board at the time. The NYA recalls that Miss Phyllis Hastings and Emerson Marting were very active in the success of the shop.
